Statz is an anthropologist of law and Assistant Professor,
Department of Family Medicine and BioBehavioral Health at UMN Medical School,
Duluth. Dr. Statz will share insights from recent research regarding
access to legal services in the Northland.

the break, Dr. Statz will moderate a spirited discussion about how to
encourage more legal professionals to serve in the Northland. Panelists
include:
Judge Tamara L.
Yon is Assistant Chief Judge for the Ninth Judicial District. Judge
Yon was appointed by Governor Tim Pawlenty in 2006. Judge Yon will
share key district court updates including a review of
recent challenges for recruiting judges in her
district.
Karin Ciano is lawyer, writer, teacher, and
Executive Director of the Collaborative Community Law Initiative, a
St.Paul-based legal incubator. Karin co-authored draft legislation that
forgives student debt for attorneys who promise to serve in
Greater Minnesota.
Leanne Fuith is Dean of the Career and
Professional Development and Visiting Professor at Mitchell Hamline
School of Law. Leanne previously practiced business law, employment law, and
commercial and employment litigation at Laurie & Laurie. Leanne
will discuss how hybrid legal education prepares students for practice and
helps rural communities retain their local talent.
Kelly Asche is Researcher for the Center for
Rural Policy and Development. Kelly will help us understand the research
which describes the reasons why families move to rural
communities.
