Judge Stephen Maxwell Portrait Celebration and Judicial Firsts Panel

When:  Oct 13, 2022 from 03:00 PM to 04:30 PM (CT)

Making a Seat at the Table: Trailblazing Judges of the 2nd Judicial District

Featuring the Portrait Celebration of Judge Stephen Maxwell

In Collaboration with the Ramsey County Law Library.

Join us in-person at the Ramsey County Law Library.

In 1968, Judge Stephen Maxwell became the first African American appointed as a district court bench, not only in Ramsey County, but also in the whole state of Minnesota. In early 2020, the Ramsey County Law Library received its first judicial portrait of a judge of color — Judge Stephen L. Maxwell. To acknowledge the new accession, a brief celebration will feature highlights of Judge Maxwell’s judicial and professional career.

As we honor Judge Maxwell on this October 13th date, it is a fitting time to recognize Ramsey County District Court (and Minnesota Judiciary) trailblazers who helped open doors for future generations with a judges panel. This CLE panel presentation is a candid conversation with Judge Kathleen Gearin, Judge Gail Chang Boar, and Judge George Stephenson - three Ramsey County trailblazing judges discussing the trailblazing judges in Ramsey County.

Additionally, the judges will discuss their road to the bench - insights about their successes and obstacles they have overcome in the legal profession and provide attendees with suggestions on how they can chart their own path.

Reception with light refreshments will follow immediately after the program.
