The law classifies and defines people. It does so often in
ways that may be seen as discriminatory or arbitrary. This Law
and Literature elimination of bias trilogy examines how the law defines others, such
as people of color, immigrants, and those accused of crimes, by
using three plays that explore identity and human interaction. The goal will be to
explore how the law and the legal process often reflects societal biases
and stereotypes about specific groups of people,
or how it makes
distinctions
based upon assumptions about individuals. Each one-hour CLE discusses
one play or short story which should be read in advance of the
program.
During this session, we will discuss
"The Island" by Athol Fugard. Other sessions in this trilogy

Reading materials will be provided to attendees in advance
of the program. Attendees are expected to read the text in advance of the
program and come prepared to discuss the
material in the context of "the other" within the
law.
