Justice
Thissen served in the Minnesota House of
Representatives from 2003-2018, including as Speaker of the House, before being
appointed to the Minnesota Supreme Court. Justice Thissen will discuss how
judges analyze statutes (sometimes using assumptions about the legislative
process that do not reflect how legislators actually do their work) and steps
legislators can take to make sure the intent of a law is clear to
judges.

In August 2017, the National Task-Force on Lawyer Well-Being released a
report: "the Path to Lawyer Well-Being: Practical Recommendations for Positive
Change." The report provided a template for looking at well-being in lawyers'
practices and lives. This program will examine the recommendations from the
perspective of the public lawyer and discuss strategies and resources for
decreased stress and increased resilience.
