Restorative justice aims to increase accountability and healing for people after crime occurs. What does research tell us about the benefits and limits of restorative justice? When and where is it best applied—and where is greater caution needed?

Dr. Emily Gaarder is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Center for Restorative Justice and Peacemaking at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She helped establish the Domestic Violence Restorative Circles Program in Duluth, Minnesota, one of the only programs of its kind that specifically works with cases of intimate partner abuse. She has evaluated restorative justice programs and facilitated restorative practices involving adult and juvenile crime for the past 15 years.

1:45 pm – Implicit Bias in the Legal Profession - 1.0 Elimination of Bias CLE credit
To better understand our growing, vibrant and diverse community and its impact on our profession, we must intentionally look at the biases, assumptions and beliefs we carry into our interactions with clients. We must first focus our efforts inward. The most effective process to making our  profession better is to start by examining ourselves then move to working together as a collective to make the necessary changes to our profession. This internal process starts with becoming more aware of unconscious bias, how pervasive it is our lives and its real implications on us, our profession.

Presenter: Bukata Hayes, Executive Director, Greater Mankato Diversity Council
